Investment Options

As a 100% independent firm, Johnston Investment Counsel can select nearly every mutual fund available. We do not have fee or any other type of revenue sharing arrangement with any outside firm. In addition, depending on the investment category, Johnston Investment Counsel will use lower-cost institutional and/or index funds. The ability to "go anywhere" in fund selection and by using lower-cost investment options, should provide plan participants with a better-performing/more cost effective menu of investment options.

In selecting funds, Johnston Investment Counsel can use either one, or both, of the following approaches:

1. Select funds in different investment style categories (for example, large value, small growth, international equity, etc.). For participants that "like to do it themselves" this approach will allow them to create a customized portfolio.
2. Johnston Investment Counsel creates pre-diversified portfolios that will exhibit different risk/return characteristics. For example, their may be a low-risk, moderate-risk, and high-risk portfolio. Another pre-diversified portfolio could be based on the participant's target retirement date. Both of these portfolios are designed to be a "one stop" decision for plan participants -- the participant determines the appropriate risk level/retirement date and then selects a pre-diversified portfolio.

If the client chooses, Johnston Investment Counsel can actively manage these diversified portfolios using its style rotation methodology. Instead of maintaining relatively static allocations to the various investment styles, Johnston Investment Counsel will adjust the portfolio's weightings to reflect changes in the current economic environment.
